Summer Release: A Refreshed Planets in Space

This is a big one. I've rebuilt Planets in Space on a modern foundation, and along the way shipped two major new features, refreshed most of the app, and fixed some long-standing annoyances. Here's everything that's new.

Two big new features

Each of these got its own post:

  • Schematics: an interactive map of the entire PI production tree. Trace any product's chain from raw resources to P4, and see which planets can run it.
  • Customize any template: translate a template's production chain to a different output product, preview the changes, and copy it ready to import.

New: dashboard

There's a brand-new dashboard, a higher-level overview built to surface what actually needs your attention:

  • Stat cards with your colony status at a glance.
  • Alerts panel for expiring extractions and anything that needs action.
  • Extraction and program status for every planet, per character.
  • Getting-started checklist to walk new users through setup.

New: home page

The home page got a full redesign. Instead of landing on little more than a login button, you now get a proper tour of what Planets in Space can do: example planet cards, and a walkthrough of the main features, so you can see what you're signing up for before you sign in. And the "beta" labels are gone: Planets in Space's refreshed UI is out of beta.

New: this Updates page

You're reading it! A dot on the nav item will let you know when there's something new since your last visit.

Improved: templates and Planet Finder

  • Consistent tier badges and better tag colors across the template list and detail pages.
  • Upvotes and deletions now reflect immediately instead of waiting for a refresh.
  • Newly created templates now appear in the list right away when you navigate back to it.
  • Planet Finder got a visual refresh with improved system search.

Under the hood

The app now sits on a rebuilt foundation, and a lot of invisible work landed with it: smarter handling of EVE's API rate limits, better response caching (fewer redundant calls to ESI, fresher data for you), and a major database-layer upgrade. You should notice the app feeling faster and more consistent. If you notice anything that broke, let me know on Discord.
